Today

We worked on Spain.

Video with transcription here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMg161bfeHg

Later I pulled that out to a PDF here:

Talked about

Using transcription to find little phrases and try them out in different fingerings all around the neck and different keys.

Found a little phrase at bar 13: #4 5 #4 4 #2 3 5 7 9 8 over a Dmaj7.  Tried a bunch of variations.

Chromatic practice - play every note ascending in one position.  going up, reach back with index to get extra note; going down, reach forward with pinky

Fingerbuster chromatic exercise. whole up, half up, whole down, half up; then repeat.

After the Lesson

From email "we can discuss your analysis [of Joe Ferrell solo on Spain] next time we meet. Try to think about not just chord-scale relationships, but development of ideas/geatures. And steal any bits you like you like, such as that lick we learned last time."

Joe Ferrell solo (Kaz transcription):

bars 1-2 stepwise motion.  A lot more 11s than i would think; i was always told 4s are square and sound like suspension, though they show up in pentatonics, so....

bars 4-7 - repeated rhythmic figure, simple chord tones.  bar 4 it's still over Gmaj7, so those notes are #13 and b5, but it's more like a pickup bar.

Looking at the band arrangement:

bars 76 to 83

bars 84-92 are a 2-5-1-4 in Dmaj (but the tune is in Bbmin, so that's a 4-7-3-6? no...)

bars 92-97 are a 2-5-1 in Bbmin.

bars 98-99 bring the 3 up which is out of diatonic, so  chromatic harmonic motion i guess.
